servicesVaccinations and General Pet Care

New clients are always welcome to update or begin their pet's care with us. You will be provided with proof of any vaccinations we administer.

Puppies and kittens should begin their vaccinations at 6 to 8 weeks of age and get them monthly until they are 4 months old. After that they require annual boosters.

Rabies vaccinations begin at 4 to 6 month of age. In order to receive 3 year vaccines for older dogs, proof from another vet is required.

We are ready to treat any problems your pet may develop whether you live near us or are visiting the area. Just call our office for an appointment.

Emergency Care - 24 Hours a Day 7 Days a Week

After-hours veterinary services are available though our office any time. Call our 24 hour emergency hotline: 231-587-0520.
Normal office hours are Monday 8am-6pm - Tuesday thru Friday 8am-5pm, and Saturday 9am-noon. We are closed on Sundays.

Surgery

Surgeries are performed Monday through Friday.

We execute a wide variety of surgical procedures, including, but not limited to, neutering and spaying, declawing, growth removals, abdominal exploratory, cystotomy as well as some orthopedic procedures.

We offer pre-anesthetic blood work, surgical IV fluids to be administered during the procedure as well as pain medication to take home to keep your pet comfortable during it's recovery.

Pre-anesthetic testing is beneficial in determining if there are any underlying problems before anesthesia is administered . This is important for all surgeries and would help us better make decisions on use of anesthetics for your pet. These values are kept in your pet's records and can be used to compare with future blood work.

We use up-to-date monitoring equipment for the safety of your pet, as well as circulating water blankets to avoid hypothermia and aid in faster recovery.

Surgeries may be scheduled by calling or using our printable Registration Form.

Pharmacy

Our well-stocked pharmacy allows us to fill your prescription immediately after seeing Dr. Ackler. Instructions are clearly printed and explained to you.

You can also use the printable Prescription Refill Request Form on our website. Simply fill it out and fax it to our office at 231-587-1051.

Preventive Screening

At Mancelona Veterinary Hospital we keep you updated about the most current veterinary profession recommendations regarding the care of your pet. The American Animal Hospital Association (AAHA) has made a few new recommendations that we feel make good sense for the health of your pet and are not too costly to have done.

The first recommendation is yearly heartworm checks. We have begun using a test that not only checks your pet for heartworm, but it also detects Lymes Disease and two other tick causing diseases, Anaplasmosis and Erlichia. With winters becoming less severe, ticks are flourishing in Northern Michigan and unfortunately, they are exposing some of our pets to the diseases they carry. With this new heartworm test, we will be able to scan them for these diseases before they begin to show symptoms and suffer from the chronic illnesses that can be caused by them.

Our pets are like infants. They can't tell us if they are feeling under the weather or if they are in pain. That is, until the condition is severe enough that they begin to exhibit symptoms that we can see. Unfortunately, by that time, your pet has progressed to the point that treatment is more expensive and it's health is severely compromised.

To get a better idea of what is going on inside your pet at this time, and to potentially head off problems before they reach this point, we recommend a preventative health care screen. These are lab tests that examine the overall health of your pet's internal organs and individual blood levels. By finding undesirable changes early in the disease's process, we can often take steps to slow down or even reverse it. Your veterinarian and technician will go over our recommendations regarding the best panel of tests for your individual pet based on it's breed, age and lifestyle.

Hospital Care

Whether for just one night or a longer stay, your pet will get the only best care in our facility.

Administration of medication, fluids and other hospital services are all done by licensed veterinary technicians or highly trained veterinary assistants. These same individuals, along with the doctor closely monitor and take care of your pet while in our hospital.

Dental Care

Why suffer from your pet's bad breath when something as simple as cleaning their teeth may solve the problem? Teeth cleaning using our most modern equipment can be scheduled any week day.

Dental disease can cause pain for your pet in addition to oral sores, tumors, and tooth loss. It is also proven to cause heart problems, septicemias (bacteria in the blood stream), as well as abscesses and lesions within other internal organs.

Just like us, pets require annual teeth cleaning and benefit greatly from frequent brushing. If you can see discoloration on your pet's teeth, then they need to be cleaned.

With every dental, hard calculus is removed from your pet's teeth with a hand scaler. We then use an ultrasonic scaler to clean sub-gingivally (beneath the gum line). The teeth are then polished with a flavored pumice to remove any etching that may be on the surface of the teeth. Afterwards, the depth of any pockets between teeth and gum tissue are measured and recorded for future comparison. Lastly, a fluoride treatment is performed to strengthen the enamel of the teeth and is performed to help prevent more problems in the future.

We carry a variety of tools for cleaning your pet's teeth at home, as well as foods and medications designed especially to keep tartar from building up on their teeth.

Call our office at 231-587-0520 for more information or to schedule a procedure.

Microchipping

Use of the Microchipping national registry is an important tool in locating a lost pet.

Insertion of the microchip is a simple process performed while you wait. Then you submit the necessary information to the national registry. You are issued an identification tag with registration information. Animal shelters now routinely scan for microchips in stray pets.

House calls

For those that are not able to bring their pet to our office, arrangements can be made to have Dr. Ackler visit their home to provide simple procedures, vaccinations or heartworm checks. Home euthanasia is another service that we will provide.

Euthanasia

If the time arrives that you need this service, our compassionate staff provides treatment in a most caring and respective manner. We have a quiet area away from the hustle of the office for your privacy.

You can be with your pet for the procedure, wait in a private office or leave your pet in our care.

If your plans do not include burial, arrangements can be made for cremation through our office.

For burial and cremation arrangements please contact Partridge Enterprise Crematory.

Protection from fleas and ticks is an important part of caring for your pet. You can purchase the supplies from us to safe guard your pet and home. Our knowledgeable staff will be glad to offer assistance and information. Purchasing your products through us allows for a guarantee, as well as rebates for most products.
